What is a Japanese Language School?

A Japanese language school (日本語学校) is a school that specializes in teaching the Japanese language to foreigners who wish to learn it. These schools not only teach grammar, vocabulary, and communication skills in Japanese but also help students understand Japanese culture, customs, and ways of life.

Japanese language courses are usually diverse, ranging from short-term courses for beginners to intensive, long-term programs for those preparing for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) or preparing to study and work in Japan.

Types of Japanese Language Schools

In Japan, there are two main types of Japanese language schools: independent Japanese language schools and preparatory Japanese language programs offered by universities and colleges.

  • Independent Japanese Language Schools: These schools are established and managed by various organizations, including professional educational institutions, private companies, non-profit organizations, and individuals. These schools primarily cater to students who wish to learn Japanese to meet the requirements for higher education programs or prepare for university entrance exams in Japan. Additionally, people learning Japanese for non-educational purposes can also enroll. To obtain a visa to stay in Japan, students must be accepted by a Japanese language school authorized by the Ministry of Justice of Japan.
  • Preparatory Japanese Programs at Universities and Colleges: These programs are designed for international students who need to achieve the necessary Japanese proficiency to continue studying at the college or university level. The program provides language knowledge, Japanese culture, and foundational courses to prepare students to meet the entrance requirements of universities. After completing the preparatory program, students can either continue their studies at the same institution or transfer to another school. These programs have the advantage of better facilities and learning resources, as they are located within university or college campuses.
