History of the University of Granada

In 1526, Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire founded a college in Granada, dedicated to teaching logic, philosophy, theology, and canon law. On July 14, 1531, by decree of Pope Clement VII, a studium generale was officially established, introducing faculties of theology, arts, and canon law. This event marked the founding of the University of Granada, accompanied by the motto “Universitas Granatensis 1531” and the university’s seal, which features the double-headed eagle of the empire and symbols of the Spanish kingdoms, derived from the founder’s coat of arms.

The University of Granada’s Rectorate is currently located in the Royal Hospital of Granada, a building inaugurated in 1526 during the reign of Charles V. Today, this building has been recognized as a BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural), part of Spain’s cultural heritage system.

In recent years, the University of Granada has developed the Granada Health Science Technology Park, a large complex dedicated to teaching (98,000 m²), healthcare (120,000 m²), and research combined with business development (170,000 m²), in collaboration with Spain’s CSIC Institute.
