History of China Medical University in Taiwan
China Medical University in Taiwan was established in 1958 in response to the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals in Taiwan and the broader Asian region. Initially, the university’s mission was to train doctors and specialists in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), aiming to combine Eastern and Western medical knowledge to provide more comprehensive healthcare services.
In its early years, CMU focused on building a foundation for programs in Traditional Chinese Medicine and developing basic infrastructure to support research and teaching. During this period, CMU gradually attracted experienced faculty and many TCM experts from Mainland China and around the world. Through this collaboration, China Medical University in Taiwan expanded both its size and reputation, becoming one of Taiwan’s leading universities.
Since the 1980s, CMU began expanding its academic departments and training programs to include Western medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, and preventive medicine. The university also intensified its investment in scientific research and established numerous specialized research institutes and centers to meet the growing needs of modern medicine. This period marked a time of continuous improvements in the curriculum to enhance the quality of education and expand its international influence.
In the 2000s, CMU not only continued to develop traditional programs but also pioneered fields in high-tech medical sciences and international collaborative programs. - 1958: The China Medical Institute was established, laying the foundation for medical education programs in Taiwan.
- 1980: The Taichung Hospital was established under the China Medical Institute to support training and provide healthcare services.
- 1984: The Beikang campus was opened, creating additional opportunities for learning and research for students and faculty.
- 1985: Beikang Hospital was founded to support healthcare activities at the Beikang campus.
- 1997: Taichung Hospital was upgraded to become the Academic Medical Center, expanding its scope of treatment and research.
- 2000: The Academic Medical Center of Taichung Hospital was established, marking a new phase in the university’s healthcare system.
- 2003: China Medical Institute was officially renamed China Medical University, reflecting its larger scale and more significant role in the medical field.

- 2008: Beikang Hospital was upgraded to become an urban teaching hospital, contributing further to the local healthcare system.
- 2010: The Annam General Hospital project in Tainan City was initiated under the BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) model.
- 2014: The Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine was recognized by the Ministry of Education as a leading research center in the field.
- 2018: The university’s Center of Excellence and New Drug Development Center were awarded the title of Leading Research Center by the Ministry of Education, solidifying its position in advanced medical research.

Enrollment Periods
China Medical University offers two intakes each year: the spring and fall semesters.
